The eel siphon by FishFlow Innovations is a modified form of the siphon fish ladder. An eel siphon can provide a solution for restoring/creating migration opportunities for eels in areas where the migration of other fish species is not desired.
How the eel siphon works
The FishFlow eel siphon, like the siphon fish ladder, consists of a closed container connected by pipes to the water on either side of the dam. Using a vacuum pump, water is brought over the highest point in the eel siphon, starting the siphoning process. The siphoning pipe of the eel siphon is equipped with brushes instead of partitions, and only a few centimeters of water flow through the siphon. This makes the eel siphon impassable for scaly fish but passable for glass eels and eels. Thus, the eel siphon is useful when it’s desirable for the hinterland of a structure to be accessible for eels but not for other fish species. This situation may occur if the quality of the fish population and/or the water on either side of a structure differs significantly.
